Cases of Prostate Cancer projected to rise in Africa; screening remains an important preventative tool.

Scientific papers from various global research sources, project that Prostate Cancer prevalance is set to increase in Africa. Not only are the rates of prostate cancer increasing, the form of prostate cancer that is seen in African, especially sub-Saharan African men, is the more aggressive type, when compared to the form of prostate cancer in men from other regions.

Scientists from Wits University in South Africa, had in 2024, released the results of the largest conducted study of its kind in Africa, which showed unique genetic risks amongst men of African origin, for prostate cancer. These unique genetic risks, coupled with several socio-economic factors, can explain why African men continue to face an increasing prostate cancer burden and mortality.

The socio-economic factors include the difficulty in accessing screening tests especially in rural areas; absence in many places of diagnostic imaging tests; and the high costs of cancer treatment.

Prostate cancer in African men, is a problem with several causative factors as mentioned above, therefore, the solutions will also be varied. Screening for prostate cancer using PSA tests, continues to be a relatively affordable and effective way to prevent prostate cancer either from developing, or from being found in the late stage, at which time it is less likely to be successfully treated.

Countries around the world have been releasing guidelines regarding the use of PSA as a screening tool. Some countries such as the UK, have advised against routine PSA screening. Given the differences in presentation, incidence and genetics, the writer recommends, that African men follow a different screening approach.

TJPF continues to provide free prostate cancer screening via PSA tests around institutions in Nigeria, as well as provide education to the populace regarding prostate cancer and other prostate conditions.
