A recent publication in scientifc journal the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, details the results of a German study which showed that PSA screening helped prevent prostate cancer related deaths in at least 2 out of 1,000 men.
In the refrenced study headed by Juan V.A. Franco, M.D., Ph.D., from the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany, 6 randomised controlled studies were pooled together to obtain their results. A total of 789,086 men aged 45 to 80 years, were included in the study. None of the men in the study had a prior history of prostate cancer.
The study's results also showed a likely increase in prostate cancer diagnosis associated with screening, for localized (stage I and II) disease, but not advanced prostate cancer diagnosis.
TJPF continues to encourage prostate cancer screening by way of PSA checks, in men of African decent with no symtoms, from age 40-45 years.
